Tea Guide

How to make a Cuppa

How to make a Cuppa

Brewing tea is really quite easy. Here are some instructions for brewing a perfect cup of tea. Although there are many ways to make tea, this is a standard English method that is widely practiced.

You will need:
  • A water kettle (no microwaves, please)
  • A teapot
  • Loose-leaf tea in a tea filter

step 1 Boil the water

First start with cold, great tasting water. Boil the water in the kettle. (Do not boil the water for a long period of time because this too will deplete oxygen). While boiling, you can take your teapot to the kettle and put a small amount of warm water into the teapot to temper it. Discard this water.

step 2 The tea!

Place loose tea leaves or filter in the warmed pot. The number of spoonfuls will depend on the size of the teapot. Rule of thumb is one scant spoonful per cup of tea required.

step 3 Take the pot to the kettle

With your tea in the pot, take the teapot to the kettle (not the other way round), and making sure the water is still at proper temperature (see chart below), fill the teapot with water. Replace the lid and cover.

Tea Water Temperature Steep Time
Green Tea 160 degrees F 1 - 3 minutes
Black Tea 212 degrees F 3 - 5 minutes
Herbal (tisanes) 212 degrees F 5 - 8 minutes

step 4 A nice cup of tea!

Let the tea in the teapot stand for a few minutes for the tea to steep accordingly. Remove filter from teapot. Then, don't just drink the tea, savor each sip.
